The shortest distance between Turkey and Cyprus is roughly 90 kilometres (about 56 miles). That is the straight-line distance from Anamur, the closest point on the Turkish mainland, to Kyrenia on the northern coast of Cyprus. The routes you can actually buy a ticket for are longer: Mersin to Famagusta covers 200-215 km by sea, while the Taşucu–Kyrenia crossing is roughly half that.
The gap between those numbers catches people out. The narrowest point on the map and the route a ferry actually sails are two different things. Below are the straight-line distances first, then the crossings that run on a timetable.
Turkey to Cyprus Distances: Route by Route
Sea distances:
Anamur – Kyrenia: about 90 km (56 miles) in a straight line. This is the shortest gap, but no scheduled passenger service runs on it.
Taşucu (Silifke) – Kyrenia: about 110-120 km. Two to two and a half hours by sea bus, four to six hours by ferry.
Mersin Port – Famagusta: about 200-215 km. Usually an overnight sailing, and it carries vehicles.
Alanya – Kyrenia: about 130-160 km. Mainly a summer-season route.
Flight distances:
Adana – Ercan: about 230 km, roughly 45-50 minutes in the air.
Ankara – Ercan: about 530 km, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes.
Istanbul – Ercan: about 800 km, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes.
These are straight-line and approximate sea-route figures. Actual sailing times depend on the vessel, the weather and the season's timetable.
Why You Cannot Drive to Cyprus
Cyprus is an island, and there is no bridge or tunnel from the mainland. If you want your own car on the island, the only option is to put it on a ferry.
This is the detail people relocating or buying property most often overlook. If you are moving furniture, bringing a vehicle or staying long term, your route is decided by ferry vehicle capacity rather than by flight time.
By Sea: Which Port Should You Use?
Taşucu (Silifke) – Kyrenia
The most heavily used crossing from Turkey to Northern Cyprus. Taşucu is about an hour from central Mersin by road and sits closer to the island than Mersin Port does.
There are two distinct services on this route, and they are easy to confuse:
Sea bus (express): roughly two to two and a half hours. Passengers only, no vehicles. Summer and winter timetables differ.
Ferry: roughly four to six hours. Carries vehicles, cabins available.
Departures are less frequent than on the Mersin route and vary by season. If you are planning a return trip inside the same week, check the timetable before you book anything else.
Mersin Port – Famagusta
A longer crossing at 200-215 km of sea route, usually sailing overnight and carrying vehicles. Arriving directly at Famagusta is an advantage if your destination is on the eastern side of the island — landing at Famagusta rather than Kyrenia saves roughly an hour and a half of driving if you are heading to İskele or Famagusta itself.
The main operators on this route are Kuzey Kıbrıs Denizcilik, the TRNC state maritime company, along with private lines such as Akgün.
Alanya – Kyrenia
Largely a summer operation. If you are coming from Antalya or the western Mediterranean coast it can save you a five or six hour drive east to Taşucu, but the schedule is considerably less reliable than on the other two routes.
By Air: Ercan Airport
All scheduled flights to Northern Cyprus land at Ercan Airport (ECN), which opened a substantially larger terminal in 2023.

If you are travelling from outside Turkey, the practical route to Ercan is a connection through a Turkish airport — Istanbul is the most common. Travellers heading to Mersin should note the city has no airport of its own; Adana Şakirpaşa is the nearest, about an hour from central Mersin by road, with a 45 minute hop to Ercan.
Ferry or Flight?
Take the ferry if:
You are bringing a vehicle. Sea buses carry passengers only; ferries carry cars.
You are travelling with bulky luggage. The allowance is far more generous than any airline's.
You are relocating or staying for an extended period.
Fly if:
You are visiting briefly or coming to view a property. Door to door you will arrive in three to four hours, against six to ten by sea.
You are travelling in winter. Rough weather cancels sailings; flights are far less affected.
You are travelling out of season, when ferry frequency drops noticeably.
Cyprus, the TRNC and the Republic: What's the Difference?
In everyday English, "Cyprus" can mean three different things, and the distinction has practical consequences for your travel plans:
The island of Cyprus: the geographic whole.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC): the northern part of the island. Kyrenia, Famagusta, İskele, Güzelyurt and northern Nicosia are here, as is Ercan Airport.
The Republic of Cyprus: the southern part, an EU member state. Larnaca and Paphos airports are here.
Entry rules follow that split, and they are not interchangeable:
Entering the TRNC: most visitors enter on a passport, with requirements varying by nationality. Check the current rules for your own passport before booking.
Entering the Republic of Cyprus: separate EU entry rules apply. The Republic does not recognise Ercan or the northern ports as legal points of entry to the island, which can affect crossing between north and south. Confirm the position for your nationality with official sources before you travel.
If Northern Cyprus is your destination, you want a flight into Ercan or a ferry to Kyrenia or Famagusta. Flying into Larnaca and crossing north is possible but goes through a checkpoint procedure.
Before You Travel
Confirm the timetable. Sea bus and ferry schedules change between summer and winter, and sailings are cancelled in rough weather.
Book vehicle space early. Deck capacity for cars fills considerably faster than passenger capacity.
Plan the airport transfer. From Ercan it is roughly 40 minutes to Kyrenia, 40 minutes to Famagusta and an hour to İskele.
Check your passport validity. Some airlines apply their own requirements beyond the entry rules themselves.
Arrange travel insurance. Confirm your policy covers the TRNC specifically — some policies that name "Cyprus" apply only to the Republic.
