Where Is Famagusta Port? Location, Access and What's Around It

Famagusta Port sits on the east coast of North Cyprus, right beside the historic Walled City. Here is where it is, how to get there, ferry connections and what surrounds it.

Famagusta Port (Gazimağusa Limanı) sits on the east coast of North Cyprus, directly beside the city's famous Walled City and Othello Castle. It is the largest cargo port of Northern Cyprus and the island's main maritime gateway to Türkiye, and it places you within walking distance of one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in the Mediterranean.

The Location at a Glance

The port faces Famagusta Bay on the island's eastern shore, adjoining the Venetian walls of the old town. Step out of the port area and you are minutes on foot from Othello Castle, traditionally linked to Shakespeare's play, the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (formerly St. Nicholas Cathedral), and the stone lanes of the Walled City.

Distances from key points:

  • Ercan International Airport: approx. 50 km, a 45-minute drive

  • Nicosia (Lefkoşa): approx. 55 km, a 50-minute drive

  • Iskele / Long Beach: approx. 15 km, a 15–20-minute drive

  • Kyrenia (Girne): approx. 75 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes by car

How to Get to Famagusta

By air: Fly into Ercan International Airport (ECN), usually via Istanbul, then drive, taxi or transfer roughly 45 minutes east. Alternatively, some visitors fly to Larnaca in the south and cross via a checkpoint; allow extra time for the border.

By sea: Regular ferry sailings connect Famagusta with Mersin on Türkiye's southern coast. The route primarily serves freight, with limited passenger capacity; foot passengers are generally better served by the Taşucu–Kyrenia line, while travellers bringing a vehicle will find Famagusta the most direct arrival point on the east coast. Schedules change seasonally, so always check the operators' current timetables. A practical detail: TRNC ports close overnight between 23:30 and 08:00, so night sailings are timed for morning arrival.

By road within the island: The Nicosia–Famagusta highway and the Iskele coastal road both lead directly to the port and city centre.

What's Around the Port?

Few working ports anywhere sit this close to living history. The Walled City begins at the port's edge; the beaches of Glapsides and the Long Beach strip at Iskele are a short drive north; and to the south lies Varosha, the once-sealed resort district now partially open to visitors. Eastern Mediterranean University gives the city a year-round student energy that keeps cafés, restaurants and services busy well beyond the tourist season.

That combination, a historic centre, a working port, a university, and a fast-growing coastal corridor toward Iskele, is what makes Famagusta the commercial and residential heart of North Cyprus's east coast. It is also home ground for Döveç Group, which has been building in the city since 1989, with most of its projects rising along the Famagusta–Iskele corridor.
